In reality, the biggest gains don’t come from prompt engineering—they come from **upgrading your workflow**. Across industries, we see three distinct levels of AI maturity: 1. **AI-Curious** — Experimenting 2. **AI-Competent** — Systemizing 3. **AI-Native** — Accelerating everything through AI This post explains what each level looks like—along with the **single habit** (AI Breadcrumbs) that can propel you out of beginner mode. ## 🌱 Level 1: AI-Curious (Experimenting, but Disposable) At this stage, you’re exploring tools and testing prompts. But the main issue isn’t curiosity; it’s **disposability**. **Common behaviors include:** - Starting every conversation from scratch - Re-explaining context repeatedly - Losing valuable outlines, drafts, or insights in an endless chat history - Treating each AI session as a one-off **The result:** No continuity. No momentum. No reusable value. ## 📈 Level 2: AI-Competent (The System Builder) Moving into Level 2 happens when you stop losing your work and start building **systems** around AI. The key habit here is the practice of **AI Breadcrumbs**.   #### 🔥 What Are AI Breadcrumbs? AI Breadcrumbs are **direct links** to your most valuable AI conversations, embedded inside the documents or project pages where your work is stored. They’re not browser bookmarks, saved prompts, or screenshots. They are **hyperlinks** that take you straight back to the conversation where the thinking actually happened.   #### Why AI Breadcrumbs Matter They solve four major problems instantly: - **No Lost Context:** Return directly to the exact chat without re-uploading files or re-explaining. - **No Rework:** Avoid rebuilding ideas you already developed. - **No Detective Work:** Don’t waste time digging through dozens of chats to find that one relevant insight. - **No Dead Ends:** Future teammates (or your future self) can see how an idea or decision was formed. #### How to Create a Breadcrumb Suppose you’re working on a project proposal: 1. Engage in a brainstorming or drafting chat. 2. Once you’ve made some progress, **copy the chat URL**. 3. Paste it into your project document under a section titled like **AI Workspace**: ``` - Drafting Conversation → [Chat Link]- Data Cleanup Conversation → [Chat Link]- Outline Exploration → [Chat Link] ``` Anytime you click the link, you jump right back into the AI chat with all the context intact.   #### When to Create a Breadcrumb Use the **10-Minute Rule**: If a chat lasts longer than ten minutes or produces content you’ll need later, **create a breadcrumb**. This simple habit transforms scattered work into an organized, reusable system. ## 🚀 Level 3: AI-Native (The Multiplier) At this stage, AI becomes the **operating system** of your workflow. Your interaction with AI isn’t just ad hoc; it’s strategic and integrated. **Defining behaviors at this level include:** 1. **AI-First Task Planning:** Begin each project or task by asking, *"Which parts should AI handle first?"* 2. **Intentional Tool Switching:** Choose specific AI models or tools based on their strengths—fact-checkers, creative writers, or data analysts. 3. **Persistent AI Workspaces:** Maintain long-running "rooms" or contexts for each project, instead of creating new chats for every task. 4. **A Prompts Database:** Develop a tight set of **10-15** go-to prompts that you use daily as your **personal command center**. ### The Roadmap from Curious to Native To evolve from AI-Curious to AI-Native, focus on building these four habits: 1. **AI Breadcrumbs** — Prevent work from getting lost 2. **Swipe Files** — Provide AI with clear examples instead of vague instructions 3. **AI-First Task Planning** — Work with AI strategically from the start 4. **Prompts Database** — Optimize your command library ### Ready to go deeper?
