From finding ways to improve internal processes to helping technicians develop their skills, Alex approaches her work with curiosity and a determination to keep moving forward. Her focus is on creating an environment where employees have the support they need to succeed and clients receive the service they depend on. We recently sat down with Alex to learn more about her career in IT, her approach to leadership, and what keeps her busy outside the office. ![Alex Bayer](https://blog.yournucleus.ca/hs-fs/hubfs/headshot.jpg?width=689&height=656&name=headshot.jpg) ### **From Customer Support to IT Leadership** Alex's career in technology began after she moved to Canada from Germany in 2008. Her first customer service role was with a point-of-sale company in Langley, BC, where she spent six years supporting customers. Eager to take the next step in her career, Alex joined Level 4 Technologies in 2016. She still remembers arriving for her interview for a Tier 1 technician position, with her children waiting in the car with her mother. She landed the job and eventually progressed to Tier 2, achieving a professional goal she'd set for herself. But another opportunity was beginning to take shape. With encouragement from a mentor, Alex started exploring leadership and discovered how much she enjoyed helping other technicians develop their skills and advance in their careers. "I thought it was really cool to develop technicians and make it possible for them to grow in their careers, just like I was trying to do for myself," she recalls. Her connection to Nucleus came through a former colleague she'd previously trained, bringing her experience in technical support, team development, and service operations into a new environment. ### **Finding Better Ways to Work** Ask Alex what a typical day looks like as Director of Operations, and she'll tell you there really isn't one. Every day brings different challenges, priorities, and opportunities to improve how things are done. For Alex, satisfaction comes from examining existing processes and finding ways to make them more effective. "What's currently working? What's not working? How can we change it?" she explains. "How do we take something that isn't working and make it work?" Sometimes improvements involve introducing a new process. Other times, they come from understanding why an existing approach works well and applying those lessons elsewhere. Better processes help Nucleus teams work effectively, meet departmental goals, and deliver the level of service clients expect. Alex enjoys the challenge of bringing those moving pieces together, especially in an industry where technology and client needs are constantly evolving. ### **Helping People Grow** Alex believes one of the most rewarding parts of leadership is helping others recognize and develop their potential. Having benefited from mentorship earlier in her own career, she understands the difference encouragement and opportunities for growth can make. One of her current priorities is supporting Nucleus technicians as they develop within their roles, building their skills and confidence while continuing to meet clients' changing needs. The connection between employee development and client service is central to how she approaches her responsibilities. "If I'm able to empower my team and give them the support they need to thrive in their roles, they'll be able to provide clients with the level of support they need to run and grow their businesses," she says. Alex measures her own success by the impact she can have on the people around her. Helping employees become more capable and confident in their work creates benefits that extend throughout the organization and into the businesses Nucleus supports. It's a philosophy shaped by her own experiences, from pursuing new opportunities in technical support to discovering a passion for developing others. ### **Learning, Adapting, and Looking Ahead** Working in IT operations has taught Alex the importance of adaptability, perseverance, and learning from experience. Challenges are inevitable, particularly in an industry where technology changes quickly and businesses continually adjust how they operate. Alex feels the most valuable lessons come from examining how those challenges were handled. A complicated client onboarding experience can reveal opportunities to improve documentation, communication, or internal processes. Applying those lessons to future projects allows teams to work together and become more effective. "We don't grow if we don't reflect," she says. Looking ahead, Alex sees plenty of opportunities for Nucleus to continue developing its operations as the company grows. New technologies, evolving client requirements, and organizational changes will create reasons to revisit processes and find better approaches. For someone who enjoys solving problems and learning new things, constant evolution is part of the appeal. "Especially in operations, it will never become boring," she says. "There's always something happening." ### **Getting to Know Alex Outside the Office** Alex's life outside Nucleus is every bit as busy as her workday. She's a mother of four boys and shares her home with two dogs, including a three-legged rescue from Mexico. She's also a horse owner with a particular connection to the Canadian horse, a distinctive breed with a long history in Canada. Her interest in horses extends into volunteer leadership. Alex serves on the board of directors of the Canadian Horse Rescue and Rehoming Society, an organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating Canadian horses. Between family life, her animals, and her involvement in horse rescue, Alex has plenty to keep her occupied when she's away from the office.
